Who pays the fee on a tip

Choose whether you cover the fees, the audience covers them, or the audience decides, in the Tips section of Setup.

Every card payment carries a fee. The card network charges roughly 1.5% plus 20p on a UK card, and AnyRequests charges 4%. On a £5 tip that is about 50p in total. You choose who pays it.

The three choices

ChoiceWhat the audience pays on a £5 chipWhat you receive
You cover the fee£5about £4.52
The audience covers the fee£5.50£5.00
The audience decides£5.50 or £5, their choice£5.00 or about £4.52
  • You cover the fee. The audience sees one amount and pays exactly that. The fee comes out of your side. They are never shown a fee. Two taps, start to finish.
  • The audience covers the fee. Your amounts are what you keep. The fee goes on top, and the audience sees the total before they pay. New accounts start here.
  • The audience decides. Two buttons. One pays the fee on top so you keep the whole amount. The other does not, and the fee comes out of the tip. Nothing is chosen for them. It is one extra decision, on the screen where they are about to pay.

The figures are estimates for a UK card. The real figures are worked out at the moment someone pays.

A card from abroad

A card issued outside the UK costs a few pence more, and that comes out of your share. It is roughly 8p on a £5 tip.

To change it

  1. Open Setup, then the Tips section.
  2. Under Who pays the fee, tap one of the three cards.
  3. Look at the small picture below the cards headed What your audience sees. It redraws for the choice you tapped, using your own amounts.
  4. Press Save everything.

You will see: the worked sum under the amounts change to match, for example "£5 on your list means they pay £5.50 and you get £5."

Nothing here changes what a tip means. It is still a thank you. See What a tip is.
