Refunding a tip

Open the tip in All tips and press Refund this tip. The audience gets everything back and our fee comes back, but Stripe's card fee does not.

Only you can give a tip back. Refunds are always in full. You cannot refund part of a tip.

From the Tips screen

  1. Open Tips in the main menu.
  2. On Overview, press See all tips.
  3. Choose the period the tip was in, then tap the tip to open it.
  4. Press Refund this tip.
  5. Read the box headed Refund this tip?. Check the amount that goes back and what it costs you.
  6. Press Refund it. To change your mind, press Keep it.

You will see: "Refunded. It can take a few days to appear on their statement." The tip is then struck through and marked Refunded.

What it costs you

  • The audience gets back the whole amount they paid.
  • AnyRequests returns its fee with it.
  • Stripe keeps its card fee. The box shows the figure: "Refunding costs you" the amount, "which is Stripe's card fee." If Stripe has not confirmed the figure yet, it says so and you can still go ahead. It usually lands within a minute.

A refund cannot be undone.

If the tip has already reached your bank

The box warns you: if the tip has already been paid out to your bank, your Stripe balance goes below zero and Stripe takes the difference back from your bank account. See You owe Stripe money.

From the live screen

When you tap a person on the live screen, their panel has Give the money back. It does the same refund. It says before you press it that the card processing fee is not returned and stays with Stripe.

When a tip cannot be refunded

  • Disputed: if someone has asked their bank to reverse a tip, Stripe has already taken the money back. The tip is marked Disputed and has no refund button. Answer it in Disputes and bank queries at the foot of All tips. If the dispute goes your way, Stripe returns the money to you.
  • Bank query: if the bank has only queried the payment, nothing has been taken and there is no fee yet. Refunding it settles the query and costs you only the tip.

If a refund fails, the box says "That refund could not be sent. Nothing has changed." Try again.
