HelpSongs and lists

When an import fails

What each import message means, whether it cost you a credit, and what to do next.

Typing songs in is always possible. If an import stops, Add manually on the Songs screen still works. Otherwise find your message below.

The file cannot be opened

  • Pages file. Pages files cannot be read. In Pages, choose File, Export To, then Word or CSV, and import that.
  • Older Excel (.xls). Open it in Excel, choose File, Save As, then Excel Workbook (.xlsx) or CSV.
  • Older Word (.doc). Open it in Word, choose File, Save As, then Word Document (.docx).
  • Too big to open. Excel and Word files can be up to 8MB, because they have to be unpacked to be read. Save as CSV and it is usually much smaller. Other files can be up to 25MB.
  • Password protected PDF. Save a copy without the password and import that.
  • Too many pages. A PDF with typed text can have up to 30 pages. A scanned PDF can have up to 10 pages and be up to 12MB. Split it up and import a few pages at a time.
  • Not a kind of file we can read. Try a CSV, a spreadsheet, a Word document, a PDF, a text file or a photo.
  • A photo in HEIC format. In Photos, choose Share, then Options, and turn on Most Compatible. Or take a screenshot of the photo and import that.
  • A photo that is too big. The limit is 25MB. A screenshot is usually much smaller.

The reading did not work

  • No songs could be found. For a photo, more light and a flatter angle usually help. Or paste the list in.
  • Only the top of the list was read. A long photo is cut off. Check the bottom of your list and add what is missing.
  • Some lines are marked ??? They could not be read. Fix them in the review.
  • Reading took too long and was stopped. Nothing has been used up. A screenshot is usually quicker than a photograph of a page.
  • The connection dropped. Check your signal and try again. We cannot tell whether the read finished, so this message does not say your credit is untouched.
  • The service is busy or not answering. Nothing has been used up. Try again in a minute.
  • Checked some songs before the catalogue took too long. Nothing has been added. Press Import again, or try a smaller file.

No credits left

Reading a photo, a scanned PDF or pasted text uses a credit. The limits are 12 an hour, 40 a day and 120 in 30 days. When they run out, the card says when the next one comes back. Spreadsheets, CSV files and typed PDFs do not use credits, and neither does Add manually.
