Why a request was refused

A request is refused when a phone has hit your limit, requests are paused or the phone is blocked, the song is not on your list, or no gig is live.

The reasons, and what the audience sees

ReasonWhat the page saysCan they fix it?
Too many from one phoneA thank-you saying that is plenty for now, then: Give it a few minutes and you can send more.Yes, wait a few minutes.
Too many from one place at onceA message saying that is a lot of requests at once, then: Give it a minute and try again.Yes, wait a minute.
Too quick at a gig that sells requestsToo quick. Try again in a minute. At those gigs the pace limit is five a minute, and the five-minute limit does not apply.Yes, wait a minute.
Requests pausedNot taking new requests just now. Anything already sent is still with the act.Yes, when you turn requests back on.
Phone blockedRequests from this phone are closed for the rest of this gig.No, not for this gig.
Song not on your listNot on their list. Pick one from the search, or browse what they play.Yes, pick a song from the list.
Act not on your listThey are not playing anything by the act. Search for someone else, or pick a song from the list.Yes.
Already askedYou've already asked for this one. It's on the list.No need. It is already in.
No gig liveNot taking requests right now.Not until you go live.
Gig closed as they sentThat gig closed while your request was sending. Nothing went through.No.
Phone out of requestsOut of requests for this gig, with an offer to buy more, at gigs that sell requests.Only by buying more.

The limit per phone

You choose how many requests one phone can send in any five minutes, from 1 to 30. The picker offers Tight (2), Balanced (4) and Relaxed (8), or a number of your own. Balanced is the starting point. See Request limits.

The five minutes roll. Nobody is locked out. As a phone's oldest request ages out of the window, it can send again. The message gives no number or countdown on purpose, because a countdown only invites a tap at the very second it ends.

The "one place at once" limit is separate. It is 60 requests a minute from one network address, so a whole pub on one wifi does not trip it, and you cannot change it.

Paused and blocked are different

A pause is for the whole room and is about now. A block is for one phone for the rest of the gig. The page never says why a phone was blocked, and shows no tip button to it. If a gig is paused, the audience can still vote on what is in the queue. See Blocking, pausing and reporting.

A list-only gig

If you chose My list only, a song must be on the list in use for the gig. The search shows only those songs, and the page offers Browse the list. See Anything or my list only.
